RES-3 digital recorders are intended to measure the current, voltage, phase shift, capacity, capacity factor and frequency in single- and three-phase power networks at certain times and to record the measured values during normal operation and in emergency situations («Electrical events» registration) in the power facilities’ hardware.

The recorder can be used in automated systems for measuring, monitoring, signaling and control of power facilities of power suppliers or power consumers. RES-3 is a project-based, software-configurable, modular, IBM-, PC-compatible industrial controller equipped with analog and binary signals I/O modules and communication modules.
RES-3 effects real-time measurements, acquisition, processing, archiving, presentation and transmission of measurement data to the control engineer`s computer.

Design and operation concept

RES-3 comprises an electronics unit and one or several terminal connections units.

The terminal connections unit integrates 2-channel analog input normalization modules and 24-channel galvanic decoupling boards for binary signals. Fast replacement of input analog modules is enabled. The electronics block ensures conversion of analog signals to digital format and their subsequent processing in accordance with the preloaded program. The recorded signals sampling frequency is defined by the user. The limiting value of this parameter is in inverse proportion to the number
of analog channels used. For a recorder with sixteen analog channels the sampling frequency amounts to 8 kHz (160 samples per 50 Hz frequency cycle).

RES-3 has independent means of displaying emergency processes as part of the relay engineer`s workstation, with data being sent to the workstation via a local network or a modem. With the help of RES-3 any electromagnetic transients associated with
short-circuits and operation of relay protection and SIPS devices (currents, voltages, binary signals on operation of relay protection and SIPS, status of breakers). It is also possible to start recording the oscillograms both in the case of setpoints being exceeding, or when a signal from external devices («dry» relay contacts or potential signal) is received.

When working with the REC-3 recorder it is necessary to define both the total duration of oscillograph records and the duration of the pre-emergency, emergency and post-emergency modes, as well as the number of records stored about a series of accidents occurring in succession.

The moment of the beginning of the accident is registered across the entire set of signals (analog or binary). Registered results are transmitted to the upper level of centralized system (automatically or when ordered by the operator) for further archiving, as well as for data presentation and retrospective analysis by means of the relay engineer`s workstation. The equipment allows to save and transmit the oscillograph records in the COMTRADE format to higher levels of system control and process control, as well as to analyze the oscillograph records according to spectral and harmonic components. Activation of RES-3 for registration of an emergency mode is effected automatically.

Setpoints are defined by the user on any channel or combination of channels for system control signals from the control engineer program and are saved when the device is turned off.

Constant recording of emergency modeparameters into the device`s memory allows to register any duration of pre-fault conditions up to the entire accident duration.
